You may have realized that certain words that may have been used in the past are not only outdated but offensive when used. Thus the first step towards caring for people who have disabilities is getting informed of the right words that you should use when you are with them. For instance, when you are referring to a person that has some disability, it is advisable and considered polite if you put their person-hood before referring to the specific condition that they are suffering from. For instance, it is proper to say an individual suffering from a mental illness as opposed to saying a mentally ill person.
